Secret Service Question...Not A Rant!?

A student asked me yesterday how long the loser in a Presidential election retains Secret Service protection? Does anyone know that? I mean, do they take off right after the loss, or is there an extended period of protection?

There is no fixed period. They assess the risk and act accordingly.

Once the election is officially settled, by the electoral college, the protection detail is removed.
McCain's protection is gone. Bush will have protection up to 10 years after he leaves office.
they retain their secret service, but on a reduced level.
It's not our business.
